Queen Elizabeth Studio School
Queen Elizabeth Studio School specialises in providing high quality technical and professional programmes for up to 300 students alongside academic study for 14-19 year olds. The specialisms in the Studio School reflect the local economy and offer pathways into employment as well as further and higher education.
Employers and the local community are very involved in designing and supporting the curriculum and work closely with the students.
Queen Elizabeth Studio School offers six “pathways”. Students opting for a pathway will combine a technical qualification in their specialist area with a mix of GCSEs or A levels together with any additional professional qualifications needed in the work place.
The six QEStudio pathways are Creative Arts, Engineering, Food, Health and Education, Sports and Environment.
YPO were awarded the contract by Eric Wright Construction as part of the five million pound new build to be the sole provider of FFE including specialist fitted furniture in the Engineering suites, Art rooms and ICT areas. YPO’s service included consultancy meetings with the end users to offer advice and listen to their needs. This created an excellent working relationship and the brief was to “look and feel like a professional environment and allow students to experience a sense of working in a professional environment." YPO provided BIM compliant drawings.
The project was DfE funded and our public sector procurement expertise ensured all suppliers and contractors were compliant via OJEU tenders and through competition cost savings could be achieved even with the high specification required for the specialist teaching areas.
Once orders had been placed, YPO co-ordinated deliveries within the Main Contractors programme and project managed the scheme through to full completion, snagging and hand over. This included an onsite project manager during the deliveries with a designated YPO installation team. We co-ordinated our fitters for the fixed furniture with M&E contractors to follow on with second fix to keep within the tight programme. YPO also attended progress meetings throughout to mitigate any issues before they arose, producing elevation drawings with service dimensions to help other trades on the scheme. This is a vital process for our projects prior to any works starting on site identifying potential clashes and saving costs.
The School were delighted with the finished scheme and all work was finished on time to open September 2019 within budget. The look and spec of furniture hit the brief for the business feel, giving students bright open spaces, high spec furniture with excellent learning environments to excel in their chosen subjects.
