The Brief
YPO was up against other suppliers for the Meadowhead sixth form development but won the brief on the back of its design concepts, product specification and healthy existing supplier relationship.
The brief itself was to create a modern sixth form area that resembled something closer to a higher education facility than a school. This involved designing a fun, modern space with lots of high-end loose fitted furniture.
By creating a space that separated itself from a traditional school environment, Meadowhead aimed to appeal to students that desired a separate sixth form college experience as well as those continuing their education within the academy.
The Challenge
The dedicated two storey sixth form extension created a vast amount of space and the scale of this development was beyond anything the academy had undertaken before.
Deputy Business Manager Matt Furniss, who co-coordinated the project, said, 'We have had extensions and developments at Meadowhead in the past but never anything on this scale. Our aim was to create a space that provided additional teaching rooms and social spaces but was also conducive to private study. Equally we wanted a facility that would support student aspirations. As soon as we consulted with Alex Wainwright (YPO Project Manager) we were confident she fully understood what we required and knew how to deliver it.
As the project progressed and we had to modify some aspects of the design layout, furniture and materials. YPO were always supportive and facilitated changes with care as the scheme developed. A productive working relationship with YPO kept the project moving forward with ease.
The Result
After a successful consultation, YPO produced 3D plans for Meadowhead’s approval. Once a design was agreed upon, YPO worked in collaboration with the school to begin development of the sixth form centre. The interior design project came in on time and on budget. Meadowhead sixth form centre opened in November 2017 and has been met with high praise from students and teachers alike. Numbers of sixth form students enrolled at the South Yorkshire academy continues to rise and Meadowhead is looking forward to expanding its sixth form provision in the future.
