Edlington & Lowedges Fire Stations form part of the South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue service. South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue wanted to address the agenda of refreshing and providing new ways of working in stations, with plans to roll this out service-wide. Edlington and Lowedges were the first stations at which the Project Management team at YPO were involved in, with the idea of finding the optimum solution to unify and future-proof each station for the next 10-15 years.
Challenge
The main challenge for South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue was being able to procure the appropriate furniture to meet the specialist requirements. The furniture must be able to withstand day-to-day station life, providing a robust, quality and modern look, as well as offering value for money. The Project Management team at YPO were appointed to provide a tailored route to market, as well as being compliant, without increasing the potential for delays and extra costs.
The Process
YPO worked with the Estates team and Fire Fighters to test and design products using samples, supplier visits and meetings to help source right product, including heavy duty kit lockers; bespoke folding beds; office storage colour coordinated per watch, to ensure that the client gained best value for money. The Office Solution framework was chosen as it is a proven solution for blue light customers, alongside numerous other YPO Catalogue frameworks, allowing the customer a tailored solution, all managed by the YPO team.
Solution
As each site was both a project site and had temporary facilities to keep each station operational, frequent communication with the client and supply chain enabled YPO to coordinate the delivery successfully around the needs of the client. Due to delays caused by the Pandemic, the project was carried out in two phases and YPO were able to coordinate the delivery of furniture when access to site was granted. The solution is both modern and practical, allowing both stations to function to their full potential and giving their fire fighters the optimum working environment for years to come.
