Currently, more than 150 schools in England have been identified as having a type of potentially dangerous concrete (RAAC) with many schools now closing buildings or classrooms to make them safe.

YPO RAAC solutions
What is the problem with RAAC concrete?

Reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), a lightweight material, was mostly utilised for flat roofing but also used for floors and walls. It is less expensive, quicker to create, and simpler to install than regular concrete. However, its lifespan is just about thirty years, and it is not as robust.

When exposed to moisture, it is prone to structural breakdown. Any rebar supporting RAAC may likewise corrode, deteriorate, and weaken if that occurs. As a result, RAAC is frequently covered in another substance, like bitumen on roofing panels. However, this substance may also deteriorate.

The problems with RAAC have been known for the last 30 years but this concrete has made the news again due to new guidance that was issued in 2021 and 2022 about how to manage RAAC.

The DfE sent out a questionnaire last year asking schools to provide information about the use of RAAC in schools across the country.
