What is a pothole?
A pothole is a hollow or dip in the surface of a road that is brought about by vehicles and ground water.
It is believed that there is an estimate of approximately 6 potholes every mile in the roads (council controlled) of England and Wales.
Why does the UK have so many?
Due to chilly and rainy weather, the UK has a lot of potholes on its roads. The heavy traffic in the UK also contributes to increased road wear, increasing the likelihood of cracks or other damage to the roads. The majority of potholes in the UK appear during the winter when water seeps through tiny fractures in the pavement, freezing and causing the road's surface to crack.
More than half of local roads have less than 15 years left in their life. Currently, 47% of local roads in England and Wales are rated as having high structural integrity, while 53% (107,000 miles) have less than 15 years left in their life. Over the course of the previous year, 94% of councils stated that their road networks had either declined or, at most, remained stable.
What funding is there, and will it be enough?
The backlog for local road maintenance reaches a record £16.3 billion. At a record high of £16.3 billion, the one-time cost to clear the backlog of road repairs and restore fair condition to local roads in England and Wales has increased by 16%. According to the study, clearing this maintenance backlog would need an average of ten years if sufficient funding was given.
The analysis clearly shows that there will still be a significant budget gap and backlog for road repair, even though the government has committed to providing an additional £8.3 billion in financing for local roads over the next 11 years. Given that less than 50% of local roads are rated as being in good structural condition overall and that fixing them would cost £16.3 billion, it is clear that more consistent investment is urgently needed.
