The impacts of climate change are increasingly felt across the globe. It is predicted that there will be more severe and frequent adverse weather events as the years pass. Just recently in the summer of 2022, much of Europe experienced extreme heatwaves and droughts. In the UK specifically, some counties even imposed hosepipe bans for several months to conserve water.
According to the UK environment agency, we are expected to continue trending in this direction with summer rainfall predicted to decrease by 15% by the 2050’s and by up to 22% in the 2080’s as well as temperatures in the south-east sometimes crossing 40C by 2100. Conserving and more efficiently using water will be critically important in managing the climate crisis.
Individual actions to save water
Water scarcity will become an existential threat in future years if not managed correctly. We need to take consistent and substantial action to ensure adequate access to water for generations to come. On a personal level there are many things we can do in our day to day lives to conserve water:
-Reducing the duration of showers and switching from baths to showers.
-Do not leave water running while brushing your teeth.
-Fill up a washing bowl when washing dishes by hand and when using a dishwasher ensure that it is full.
-Fill up a jug of cold water and leave it in the fridge so you don’t need to let the tap run to let the water cool.
-Fix any leaking taps pipes and toilets.
-Installing water-efficient taps.
Water Procurement in the Public Sector
Creating a culture of respect around consumption and the use of water and natural resources is paramount. Nonetheless, household water consumption equals about 10% of total usage. Although individual action is important, increasing efficiency at the level of industry, business and institutions is vital piece of the puzzle for tackling the issue as a whole.
