Numicon is an award-winning primary maths resource that uses a multi-sensory approach to help children think mathematically. It is used from early years onwards where children are just beginning to learn basic equations, number bonds and mathematical patterns, as well as for children with special educational needs who may struggle with written or mental maths and require a visual aid.

A Unique Approach
Numicon is based around the concrete-pictorial-abstract approach, using structured imagery and apparatus to better explain and understand math concepts. The Numicon Shapes make numbers and number relationships real instead of an abstract concept, giving children the confidence to persevere and develop a deeper understanding and higher level of achievement.

Patterns
A visual aid like Numicon works because of patterns, which are inherent in mathematical equations and universally understood by the human brain. When children observe the patterns and grasp how and why one number is bigger than the other, or why equations result in specific answers, this understanding can be applied to more complex maths in the future. This logic can then be applied to other areas outside of mathematics, such as reasoning and critical thinking.

Concepts Taught
Specifically, Numicon teaches number bonds and why there is often more than one right answer, visually counting by recognising colours and patterns, and simple addition, subtraction, doubling and halving.

Teachers can also invent their own creative ways to play with Numicon for a fun, hands-on experience that children of all learning styles and abilities will love.
