How to understand the FSC labelling

There are three different labels an FSC certified product can have.

• FSC Mix
• Products or packaging with the FSC Mix label utilise materials that are at least 70% FSC-certified or recycled; the remaining comes from FSC controlled wood sources. Controlled wood is not sourced from FSC-certified forests; however, it mitigates the risk from unacceptable or high-risk sources.
  
  
• FSC Recycled
• Products with this label utilise forest-based materials that are verified as 100% recycled, whether post-consumer or pre-consumer reclaimed. However, it is not a guarantee that the wood originally comes from an FSC-certified forest.
• FSC 100%
• Products with the FSC 100% label use only materials sourced from FSC-certified forests. It’s less common for paper products because FSC‑certified and uncertified fibres must never be mixed which is very difficult in a pulp and paper production facility.

What is the EUDR, and what does that mean for the UK?

EUDR-compliant paper refers to paper products that meet the EU’s new Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which takes full effect on 30 December 2026. It requires that paper, pulp, and other forest-risk commodities placed on the EU market are proven to be deforestation-free, legally harvested, and fully traceable across the supply chain.
