What is World Teachers' Day?
World Teachers' Day began in 1994 and is celebrated every year on October 5th. It is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge and share gratitude for the positive impact teachers have had on all our lives. Where possible, we encourage you to thank a teacher today!
Why is World Teachers' Day significant?
The importance of World Teachers' Day is that it commemorates the implementation of consistent rights and standards within the education sector. The 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers and 1997 UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel outline these.
World Teachers' Day 2024
Each year, the theme for World Teachers' Day changes. The theme for 2024 is “Valuing teacher voices: towards a new social contract from education”. With this theme, UNESCO hopes to highlight:
- The value of teachers voices and the importance of including their perspective and expertise in decision-making processes and educational policies.
- The need to recognise and attend to the challenges faced by teachers, such as working conditions and teacher shortages.
- The importance of creating a supportive environment so teachers are able to develop themselves professionally.
- Foster a more inclusive conversation about the role of teachers in education
Despite challenges, there are still so many amazing teachers continuing to do such awe-inspiring work. At YPO, we wanted to recognise this.
Celebrating our teachers' voices this World Teachers' Day
At YPO, we wanted to show our support by honouring and celebrating the incredible voices of teachers. That is why, this World Teachers' Day, we are sharing two videos of advice from teachers for teachers to showcase our appreciation for the difference they make. The advice is read out by different YPO colleagues as we wanted to use OUR voice, to share YOUR voice.
What was clear from the advice we received is that there is a whole community of support within the education sector of teachers supporting other teachers. Here are our top takeaways:
- Collaborate and help one another whenever possible, for example sharing lesson plans and ideas, peer reviewing lessons, etc.
- Work smart not hard. We recommend using the planning and assessment resources by our partner Twinkl
- Your wellbeing matters – Hydrate, rest, ground yourself, spend time with your family
- Be kind to yourself. Not everything will go to plan. You are still making a difference.
- Be authentic! Students value you for your whole self, mistakes, fears, and achievements included
It is also so clear to us how much these teachers love what they do and enjoy working with children, helping them grow and develop. We are so proud to showcase teachers that are passionate, encouraging, empathetic, caring, resilient, adaptable, joyful, appreciative, dynamic, creative, and authentic.
Thank you, teachers.
