Meet Pyxel, a coder's best friend

The coding pet that can walk, bark, and show emotions! Starting with Blockly and moving on to Python, building problem solving, creativity and digital skills while having fun. I set up an activity for my class which was inspired to make coding engaging and accessible to all learners. By using the Pyxel dog, Pupils have a fun context, helping to reduce any anxiety they may have around coding. My goal was to help develop logical thinking and perseverance, while also encouraging creativity and independence. My aim was to support collaboration with children, sharing ideas and helping each other debug their own code.

Introducing the activity

To introduce the activity, I gave the children a short demonstration, on how the Pyxel dog could be controlled using simple code and age appropriate coding equipment. We discussed key vocabulary and broke the task into small, manageable steps to build up the children's confidence. Once the children began, they quickly took ownership of their learning. Some of the children followed the initial instructions closely, whereas others began experimenting with the task. Which naturally led to peer support, with children sharing tips and solutions. There was lots of trial and error, which was encouraged as part of the learning process.

Can you talk us through your setup, including resources and layout choices that supported engagement?

The Pyxel activity was set up as part of a rotation of learning stations, which helped keep the lesson dynamic and allowed for small group engagement. At the Pyxel station, children worked in pairs on a device with the program already set up. Using reliable coding equipment for schools to ensure no time was lost on technical issues. I provided visual aids with key commands and example code to support independence. This allowed pupils to refer to these without needing constant adult input.

I positioned the station to allow for easy discussion, which encouraged children to collaborate, share ideas, and support one another. To maintain engagement, I included challenge cards for early finishers. This included offering extension tasks such as modifying the dog’s movement or adding new features. This structure ensured that all learners remained motivated and appropriately challenged throughout the activity.

How could this activity be adapted to suit different age groups and abilities?

For younger or less confident learners, the activity could be simplified by providing step by step instructions or partially completed code. For more advanced learners, additional challenges, such as modifying the dog’s behaviour, adding interactions, or creating a simple game using the same coding equipment. Pairing children strategically also supported differentiation to allow for peer modelling and support.

What advice would you give to another practitioner or parent looking to try a similar approach?

Start simple and focus on building confidence before adding complexity. Ensure all technology is set up in advance to avoid disruptions. Use visual support and model the process clearly. Encourage an environment where mistakes are seen as part of learning, especially in coding. Finally, allow time for exploration. Some of the best learning happens when children go beyond the initial task and try out their own ideas!
