The challenge
Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFR) aim to continue providing our communities with sustainable, high-quality firefighting, rescue and preventative services. In order to achieve this, all staff must be able to easily acquire the necessary PPE and clothing required, including all types of shields.
It had come to recent light that the public order shields currently in Force at HWFR needed to be replaced within the next couple of months. Public order shields are fundamental equipment used in public order training and operations, designed to provide emergency service teams with appropriate coverage and protection from heat, flame and chemical solvents. There was an urgent requirement for HWFR to find an effective solution for the replacement of these shields.
The solution
HWFR were able to make use of YPO’s PPE Workwear, Uniform and Managed Services – 1204 - Framework to carry out a direct award for the replacement of all public order shields. This approach allowed them to procure the same existing model that is currently used in Force and by public order officers in training, ensuring consistency in operational equipment and overall performance. Through utilizing this compliant framework agreement, HWFR found that this saved them time and resources as they did not have to carry out their own tender process. This also meant that they were able to use a legally compliant and effective process.
Result
Through this framework, HWFR were able to ensure that their purchase order for the new public order shields was successfully placed in a timely manner, allowing for the complete replacement of all shields to happen before the expiry date of the existing equipment. By taking this proactive approach, they will have diminished any risks associated with using outdated or non-compliant PPE.
Experience with YPO
Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said:
‘Corresponding with YPO for this matter has been highly positive and I found it very easy to access the framework and find the items we required.
It was simple and easy to complete the Confirmation of Award form, and I would be happy to use the framework again in the future for any other requirements.’
