What is the King’s Coronation?
The coronation of a monarch is a symbolic event which formally gives the monarch their regal position. In this case, His Majesty King Charles III will be officially crowned King, for the country to see and celebrate.
Where is the coronation taking place?
The coronation will take place on the 6th of May 2023, and will be held at Westminster Abbey in London. Although members of the public can’t go inside the actual coronation, people will have the opportunity to watch the procession go through London.
The coronation will also be broadcast live for fans around the world to watch. It will be televised on BBC1 and BBC iPlayer.
There will also be an exciting coronation concert which will be broadcast live the day after, on the 7th of May 2023. This will be a coronation celebration, with lots of music performances to enjoy.
We’ve put together our favourite classroom activities to help celebrate the coronation and get in the royal spirit! Read below for some regal inspiration.
Make a crown fit for a King
Create a fun royal crown to help celebrate the King’s coronation! Use your imagination to create your own coronation crown, decorating it with your choice of pens, markers, pencils, jewels and collages. We stock packs of blank crowns ideal for use in your coronation celebrations. Set out the activity by getting out paints, pens, pencils and any other decorations such as pom poms, pipe cleaners, and anything sparkly!
Create a Union Jack flag
Make your own decorated flag to wave to celebrate the coronation whilst watching it! Union Jack flags are traditionally red white and blue, so look for paints, pens and decorations in the same colours. Print out a black and white template of the flag on A4 paper, and once decorated, glue a wooden stick onto one end of it to create a handheld flag, perfect for waving!
Make coronation bunting
Make a fun decoration for the classroom or home with some coronation bunting! Our friends at Pritt have created print out to make some summer bunting, ideal for decorating for the coronation. Simply print out the bunting decorations, decorate them using your favourite pens, pencils and paint, and hang up in your location of choice! Click here to download the printout.
Create a time capsule
Be part of a historic occasion – coronations don’t happen often! Creating a time capsule is something that the whole class can get involved with. Simply ask pupils to create something to put into the time capsule, which will be opened at the next coronation! This could be in many years to come! Pupils could write a letter to future pupils, make a card, or create a collage of their favourite things in the year 2023.
Make a King’s coronation diary
A great way to teach children about what the coronation is, and why it happens, is to have them write a diary entry as if they were the King. This could be from the days leading up to the coronation, up until the coronation itself, writing about all the details of the event, including their own thoughts and feelings as the King.
Build a castle
A fun activity for children to celebrate the coronation could be to build their own castle to decorate! Use old boxes and pieces of card to have children create their own castle – empty toilet paper rolls make great turrets! Once built, children can decorate their own castle with their favourite pens, pencils and decorations.
