Looking back over the last 50 years of firefighting and how times have changed
Firefighting in the 1970s was not too different from earlier decades, nor was the turnout gear, which only provided minimal protection. For example, helmets were plastic, aluminium or leather.
Not only was the level of protection minimal but the way that it was managed following an incident was also inadequate compared to today’s standards.
The standard of turnout gear has improved due to modern day technology, manufacturing, new materials and many more specialist organisations in the industry. We also have a much better understanding of the risks involved during and after incidents, especially from long-term exposure to heat and harmful toxins. You can read up about the risks and reducing them in our Decontamination – Firefighter control measures blog.
What else has been developed over the last 50 years?
The role of a firefighter has changed significantly, now covering a far wider range of duties along with new equipment used. Emergency vehicles and equipment they carry have been developed to meet the requirements of different situations with the inclusion of ROV’s, thermal imaging cameras, PPV fans, vehicle stabilising and cutting equipment for example.
Because of improved standards and preventative work supported by all fire services, there has been an overall reduction in the number of fires. However, firefighters still face challenges with hazardous materials, road traffic incidents, medical emergencies, floods, wildfires and even rescues cats in trees (yes, really, according to our source The role of a firefighter | Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service (dsfire.gov.uk)).
What hasn’t changed?
There will always be a need for firefighters who train to the highest standards and work in challenging situations. It is reassuring that today’s clothing and equipment enables them to perform their essential duties with far less risk than many years ago.
