What is a statutory engineering inspection?
Statutory Inspections are periodic inspections of equipment to keep it compliant with statutory and regulatory requirements.
What are the requirements/criteria?
Statutory inspection applies to wide range of equipment in accordance with the following regulations:
- The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)
- The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER)
- The Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR)
- The examination of Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems (LEV) which fall under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002 (COSHH) regulations
- The examination of any electrical system which are regulated by the Electricity at Work regulations 1989 (EAWR)
- The Working at Height Regulations 2005 (WAHR)
What kind of equipment does it apply to?
- Mostly, schools will be inspecting the following items:
- Lifts and lifting equipment
- Boilers and pressure plant
- Local exhaust ventilations systems
- Power press
- Electrical equipment
Are all schools required to have an inspection?
The Statutory Inspection is required by law on all applicable equipment, therefore all schools should be undergoing regular inspections to make sure they remain complaint and that equipment around the school is safe to use.
Who carries out the inspection?
In our engineering inspection services framework, a statutory engineering inspection will be carried out by one of our 4 appointed providers: Ashdale Engineering, British Engineering. RMP (HSB), Zurich municipal. All 4 of our providers hold the required accreditations and certificates:
- UKAS accreditation to ISO 17020:2012 as a type A inspection body
- SAFed membership
What happens before and during the inspection?
When planning the inspection, it is important to give the supplier a list of items that need inspecting. If you are unsure which items you should include in your list, please get in touch with YPO and we will provide you with the list of items to consider. If you forget about one of the items, don’t worry - our supplier will be able to advise what additional items have been missed but must be inspected. The inspection of additional items can be done on the day of original inspection date so there is no need for an additional visit.
What happens after the inspection?
After the inspection, the supplier will issue an inspection report, which will be emailed to the school or customer will be able to access it directly via supplier portal. In the report, the supplier will include information about inspected items, and whether there are any serious defects or not. Based on the report outcome, the school may need to arrange some repairs to restore the items condition, or in some cases, the item may need replacing.
