Autumn is a wonderful time to get outside, explore and take inspiration from nature, so why not combine it with some nature crafts? Using natural materials is a great way to lessen our environmental impact, boost creativity and teach children about the world around them. We've put together three simple crafts which turn pinecones, rocks and fallen leaves into spooky monsters, which could double up as spook-tacular classroom decorations.
Let’s make a pinecone spider!
Let your pupils explore the current changing of the seasons by letting them find their own pinecones to make their own pinecone spider!
To make your pinecone spider you will need:
How to make:
- Start by cutting black paper straws into 6-8cm long pieces (remember that spiders have eight legs!).
-
Next, fold your paper straw pieces in the centre to create a bend in the spider’s leg.
-
Using glue, stick the paper straw legs to the side of your pinecone – 4 legs on each side.
- To finish your spider, stick on googly eyes to the bottom of the pinecone to make your spectacular spider’s face!
Let’s make some spooky pebble buddies!
To make our spooky pebble buddies you will need some pebbles. Why not let your class explore the playground/outdoor space and find their own pebbles to transform!
To make your spooky pebble buddy you will need:
How to make:
- Firstly, decide what spooky buddy you are going to create – let your imagination run wild! Our favourites are pumpkins, cats, ghosts and monsters.
-
Paint your pebble in the colour of your chosen buddy (e.g. if you are creating a pumpkin you would paint your pebble orange).
- Finally, add the finishing touches to your spooky pebble buddy such as eyes, a mouth and anything else you wish! We recommend using marker pens or a paint marker if you painted your pebble a darker colour.
Create a leafy monster!
Spooky leaf decorations are quick and easy to make, and are a fun way for your class to go searching for the perfect leaf to create their spooky monster.
To make your leafy monster, you will need:
- 73957x Berol Drywipe Marker Pens, Fine Tip, Black - Pack of 12
- Leaves – have a look outside for some fallen autumn leaves!
How to make:
- Have a search outside for some autumn tree leaves – they come in lots of shapes and colours, so look around for different types.
- Grab your marker pens, and start drawing your chosen spooky face – this could be a monster, a pumpkin, or anything Halloween-related. It may also depend on the colour and shape of the leaves, so take inspiration!
- To display your spooky leaves, stick them to a piece of string to create the perfect Halloween garland.
