These black canvases have a surprising number of benefits in both appearance and practicality that have made them a popular choice for children and seasoned artists alike. Although suitable for a variety of uses, they are highly recommended for Halloween art projects to bring out that extra spooky feel.

Cotton Canvas
Cotton is the most popular style of canvas as it is affordable, flexible and lasts a long time compared to linen alternatives. It will accept oil and acrylic paints best, with watercolours proving difficult to blend and overlay due to the material’s water resistance and lack of absorbency.

With high flexibility, the canvas is very durable and will not rip easily. This is perfect for young children who may be rough or exert high pressure when painting, and are not quite used to the delicate medium of canvas.

Paintings on cotton canvas last a very long time - even decades depending on the paint used - and can be displayed by teachers at school or taken home to hang up with pride with no problems at all! Although linen canvases are longer lasting, they are best suited to artists who want their masterpieces to outlive them, and are otherwise not worth the investment for casual arts and crafts.

Black Canvas
Black canvas has many uses, and is popular for its ability to make bright opaque colours pop, evoke a sense of mystery, and add an eye-catching, unique look to a painting. Metallic paints look particularly striking on black canvas as it allows their colour to shimmer much more vividly.

Aesthetically, black canvas helps avoid the empty look that burdens simpler, less-detailed paintings, turning average works of art into great ones. It also provides the opportunity to experiment with white and other bright coloured paints that are normally reserved for mixing, in turn producing memorable and impactful effects due to their rarity.

A black background is particularly ideal for night-time, space, or Halloween-themed paintings.

Practicality
There are also practical benefits to black canvas. Mistakes are not as easy to spot, which is great for children and beginners - and for perfectionists, any detail can be easily removed without a trace just by adding black paint.

Compared to painting your own background, these pre-dyed canvases ensure a perfectly consistent black background every time. This saves the artist resources, time and effort where these are running low, and prevents them from having to wait for the background to dry before getting started.

The Perfect Size
The small 150 x 150mm canvas size is great for children just being introduced to painting on canvas where a larger size would be wasteful. It is also ideal for any small project or those wanting to experiment with black backgrounds without too much of an investment.
