Schools across Yorkshire are taking inspiration from the world famous storyteller Roald Dahl to celebrate science during British Science Week (March 10th – 19th).
A free to download lesson plan featuring Roald Dahl favourite, ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’, is the latest in a series of themed resources available from Wakefield based YPO, the UK’s largest public sector buying organisation, and created in partnership with the Roald Dahl Literary Estate.
Children at Crigglestone St James Academy in Wakefield were encouraged to imagine recipes for their own perilous potions using the marvellous lesson plan that encourages having fun with splendiferous science. The Children had the opportunity to become Masters of Invention creating a magic medicine recipe book, and the creative lessons also help teachers deliver literacy and PSHE objectives.
Miss Hirst, teacher at Crigglestone St James Academy said “We’ve fully embraced National Science Week in our class and the children have loved trying out some experiments, all in the sprint of George’s Marvellous Medicine. It’s been great to get our hands dirty and demonstrate how fun and practical science lessons can be.”
YPO’s commercial director Jo Marshall said: “We’re using the colourful and creative Roald Dahl stories to get children engaged and excited in science during British Science Week. Other lesson plans available to download include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with Fantastic Mr Fox following later in the year.”
Dr Mark Biddiss, recognised as one of the UK’s leading education providers to both teachers and pupils, and a tutor on YPO’s 2017 professional and learning and development programme, CPD, commented: “Teaching children knowledge about science and maths isn’t enough. It’s vital to build in hands-on science investigations, experiments, tricks and other novel activities and ideas which stimulate, engage and inspire young ‘scientific’ minds. Using the Roald Dahl stories as a spark for science based lessons is a terrific resource.”
YPO is one of Roald Dahl Literary Estates’ official educational resources partners. The not-for-profit company provides all the products and resources teachers need to bring lesson plans to life. These include everything from pens, glue sticks, tissue paper, stencils, and scissors through to specific science resources such as laboratory equipment. Teacher resources include lesson plans, as well as ideas and inspiration to encourage pupil interaction and creativity.
