Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving

Course Details

The three aims of our national curriculum are fluency, reasoning and problem solving – this
course will examine how are they related, why they cannot be separated, and how to plan in a way
that encourages mastery. We will look at some of the misconceptions surrounding the mastery
approach, and consider the important research base that points to what works best in primary maths
classrooms.

The course will
Take a fresh look at bar models, including a breakdown of the ten steps
needed to become proficient at the modelling technique, along with some practical examples.
Look at key practical resources to make the most of Bruner’s CPA research.
Provide a bank of ideas and tools to help plan effective learning
journeys for pupils and a renewed passion and confidence for maths!..
