Course Details

This course will cover four key sessions:

•Rich mathematics for all: work on low threshold high ceiling tasks from NRICH and explore how they can be used with all learners.
•The problem-solving process: unpack the four NRICH stages of problem solving and use tasks to exemplify each strand.
•Using the website to support planning and engagement: navigate NRICH’s curriculum mapping documents, which link to curriculum objectives.
•Developing a productive disposition: focus on NRICH tasks being used to develop learners’ “habitual inclination to see mathematics as sensible, useful and worthwhile” and mini-plenaries will be used to encourage mathematical resilience, even at the end of the day!

Learning Outcomes

•Learn how to nurture resilience to persevere with a task beyond just one solution.
•Take away skills to create and embed a classroom culture that fosters dialogue.
•Receive support to aid with planning and pedagogical opportunities afforded by NRICH’s interactivities.
•Explore research that illustrates the five strands of mathematical proficiency as a rope model.

Fran Watson
Fran was a maths teacher for 13 years before she joined the NRICH team five years ago. She has worked in lower, middle, upper, primary and secondary and is passionate about problem solving and sharing her enthusiasm for maths in general. Despite having taken a slightly scenic route to a career in the classroom, via an engineering degree, she loves the interesting variety provided by working with children and teachers in her role as NRICH’s primary PD lead.
